As we prepare to launch another small business website this week I was talking to our Creative Director today about what a great job I thought he did with this logo. I LOVE it! It’s more than the design of it, it’s the look and how it accurately represents the business and their personality. POSH Monkey is a children’s boutique in the heart of Sewickley, PA and it’s cute, fun, and full of energy. I think the logo really nails it and they agreed. Look how good it looks prominently displayed on their new store window! (FYI…there is a Grand Opening and ribbon cutting this coming weekend if you happen to be out that way. ;>)
This got me thinking of many of my small business customers who often times are already walking in uncomfortable territory navigating the Internet and are often unsure of what they need and why. So who needs a logo? Technically speaking nobody does. You can certainly create a business without one, and you can even get away without it for a new website. So why worry about it? Why pour any time, money, and extra energy in to creating a logo for your company?
Logos speak. They are intended to be the “face” of your company and a graphical display of your identity. Using images, colors, and fonts customers learn a little about who you are. Practically speaking logos are used as shorthand for your company in advertising and marketing materials as well. The sign on your building or window. Your newspaper ads, flyers, print materials…website! Today you get as little as 2 seconds on your website to tell a viewer who you are and what you do before they ever veer off to read and learn more about you. The combination of the logo, website, and oftentimes a tagline and/or image usually do the trick. It’s a powerful combination and a necessary set of tools.
I love logo development and am often disappointed when we work on websites or custom applications where the business already has one. The logo is personal because it inherits the identity of the owners and the staff and as such it can be a tough, but exciting process. At the end of the day it’s fun! A logo can be inspiring, it can be fun, and ultimately it’s important! Everyone needs a logo. Do you have yours?
